The Exorcist (IMPORT)
This year marks the 25th anniversary of possibly one of the singular most terrifying films of the 20th Century. The Exorcist, is not only memorable as a ground breaking horror film, it caused alot of controversy when it was released due to its religious overtones as well as themes relating to satanic possession and lost faith. Relive the moments by bringing home the score.
The Omen
The best of the Damien Thorn saga, this 70s classic also had a satanic theme but it had a different way of gripping you to your seat.Blending the haunting sounds of a full choir and Bartok inspired music, Jerry Goldsmith perfectly captured the essence of the film.
Halloween
20 years this small budgeted thriller took the audience by storm and garnered almost $50 Million at the box office. The soundtrack stands out on its own and you don't even need to have seen the film to feel its affects. John Carpenter avoided the typical operatic and orchestral style and proves that keeping it simple can be just as chilling.
Suspira [IMPORT]
If you are a fan of Dario Argento and Goblin, the group responsible for breaking new ground in horror music, then the Suspiria Soundtrack is a must have for your collection. Goblin's music only adds to the film's real terror and I often wonder if the film would have had the same impact if Goblin had not done the music.
Carrie
The film shot Sissy Spacek to stardom and introduced the public to John Travolta and gave name recognition to director Brian DePalma, yet the score went mostly unnoticed. The understated score by Pino Donaggio's starts off first with a gentleness that represents Carrie's innocence than transcends into subtle forboding when Carrie is taunted than the gushing climatic prom scene to Carrie's death. The addition of chilling dialogue by Piper Laurie's character peppered throughout the CD only adds to the effect.
Psycho
Sadly, Bernard Herrmann's chilling score was mostly scrutinized and even denied an Academy award nomination. Today, it is fondly remembered most notably for the angry violin strings during the shower scene.
This is another film score where one does not have to have seen the film for its utter melancholy and frenzied madness simply touches you.
Poltergeist
Rhino Records deserves to be thanked for reissuing this soundtrack! The score is a mixture of soft sections, to loud, dark and ominous pieces that take on terrifying tone.
Though not in the same league as some of the previous soundtracks, it definitely creates the perfect 'mood'.
Evil Dead//Evil Dead 2//Army of Darkness [IMPORT]
This compilation is defintely worth it especially if you are a big fan of the films!
This score is kind of difficult to define.
Its kind of offbeat as well scary and each score definitely sets the tone and mood of the films.
House Of Dark Shadows/Night Of Dark Shadows
Fans of the 60's cult classic gothic soap, will love this compilation. for it contains contains both scores to the films; 'House Of Dark Shadows' and 'Night Of Dark Shadows'.
Both scores helped to enhance the mood of the film and at that price, you can't beat it!
Near Dark
If you are a fan of this cult classic, which stars Bill Paxton and Lance Henriikson, then the soundtrack is definitely a must have!
Near Dark put a unique spin on the vampire mythos and this soundtrack perfectly captures the essence of the film.
The Hunger
One of the biggest cult film of the 80's, this score is fairly unconventional as it incorporates haunting classical pieces from some of the world's most reknown composers, some including; Schubert and Bach. Its darkly romantic melancholy is quite stirring and it is not neccessary to have seen the film to enjoy this soundtrack.
Scream
The hit film Scream managed to give new life to the horror genre and it also had a great soundtrack.
The Soundtrack is a nicely balanced mixture of ballads, rock and alternative and it successfully stands on its own.
Cat People
Giorgio Moroder's instrumental and electronic music adds an ominous tone to the film about an ancient race of Cat People.
David Bowie's angry and sensual song "Putting Out The Fire" is one of the singer's most underrated
musical works.
Shawshank Redemption
Though not a horror film, The Shawshank Redemption is one of the best films to come around in a decade and deserved much more recognition than it got.
The inclusion of 'Marriage Of Figaro (Sull' Aria)', by the Berlin Opera makes the CD a worthy of purchasing.
